Acupuncture FAQ

Most people feel very little discomfort. You may notice a brief pinch with insertion followed by sensations like a dull ache, warmth, heaviness, or light tingling. These sensations are normal and usually fade quickly. Many patients become deeply relaxed during treatment.

This depends on your condition, how long it has been present, and your overall health. Acute issues sometimes improve within a few visits. Chronic or long-standing patterns generally require a series of treatments to create lasting change. Your practitioner will give you a personalized treatment plan based on your presentation.

Yes. Acupuncture is widely used during pregnancy for symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, sleep changes, and musculoskeletal discomfort. Certain points are avoided during pregnancy, so it is important to work with a licensed acupuncturist who has specific training in prenatal care.

We are an out-of-network provider. We can provide superbills you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan.

Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists that targets trigger points within muscles. It focuses on musculoskeletal release.
Acupuncture is a complete medical system practiced by licensed acupuncturists and physicians who study Chinese medicine theory, meridian pathways, physiology, internal medicine, and safety. Acupuncture addresses the whole person, including pain, digestion, hormones, sleep, stress, emotional wellbeing, and overall balance.

Have a light meal beforehand, wear loose and comfortable clothing, stay hydrated, and plan a few minutes to relax before and after your session. If you tend to become very relaxed or sleepy after acupuncture, consider scheduling later in the day.

Yes. When performed by a licensed acupuncturist, acupuncture is extremely safe. Only sterile, single-use needles are used, and your practitioner is trained in Clean Needle Technique to ensure safety at every step.

Many patients notice improvement after the first session, such as feeling more relaxed, centered, or clear-headed. Changes in pain, sleep, digestion, and mood often occur within the first few treatments. Chronic or long-standing conditions may require more time as deeper patterns begin to shift. Your practitioner will guide you on what to expect based on your specific presentation.

Yes. Acupuncture integrates well with naturopathic care, functional medicine, physical therapy, chiropractic, massage, mental health therapy, and conventional medical treatments. It can also support recovery from surgery, injury, or chronic stress. Your practitioner can coordinate care with other providers when needed.

We work with many patients who are needle-sensitive or anxious. Acupuncture needles are much thinner than medical needles and designed to create minimal sensation. We can use very gentle techniques, including shallow needling, non-insertive Japanese methods, acupressure, or moxibustion. Your comfort is always our priority, and you can stop or modify treatment at any time.

A Brief History of Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,500 years ago and has developed through many classical lineages, from Han Dynasty medical texts to modern Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Over time, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese styles added further refinement in technique and diagnosis. Today, acupuncture is practiced around the world and is integrated into hospitals, primary care clinics, and wellness centers.

Styles & Lineages of Acupuncture Used at the Boulder Clinic

At Whole Systems Healthcare Boulder, we draw from several classical and modern acupuncture traditions to create a comprehensive and individualized approach. These include:

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
A widely practiced system that uses meridian theory, point combinations, and pattern-based diagnosis.
  • Japanese Acupuncture
A gentle style that can include non-insertive methods and emphasizes refined palpation and subtle needle technique.
  • Worsley Five-Element Acupuncture
A constitutional approach that focuses on emotional balance, seasonal physiology, and the five phases.
  • Shen-Hammer Pulse Lineage
A detailed diagnostic system that uses pulse qualities to assess organ function and internal patterns.
  • Jeffrey Yuen Lineage
A classical lineage rooted in channel theory, eight extraordinary vessels, and deeper constitutional work.
  • Zhu’s Scalp Acupuncture
A modern technique useful for neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Non-Insertive Acupuncture Techniques
Ideal for sensitive patients and those who prefer minimal needle stimulation.
  • Moxibustion (Direct and Indirect)
A warming herbal therapy used to support circulation, digestion, immune health, and overall vitality.

This blended approach allows for adaptable, effective, and highly individualized treatments based on your presentation and clinical needs.

How I Use Acupuncture in My Practice

By Donald Spears, ND, MSOM, LAc

In my holistic medical practice in Boulder, Colorado, I integrate acupuncture and East Asian Medicine with my naturopathic medical training. Looking through three different diagnostic lenses, including Western conventional testing, naturopathic assessment and functional labs, and Chinese medicine pattern diagnosis, allows me to determine a more complete path forward for each patient. Many people are used to receiving a disease label in Western medicine, and while identifying pathology can be helpful, it often does not explain how the body is functioning as a whole. To truly understand health, we need to look at the body as an interconnected system rather than separate parts. Like a network, health emerges when the different systems of the body are working together in coherence. This sometimes means supporting a part of the network, such as the HPA axis or liver metabolism, to help restore balance throughout the system. I have found that acupuncture is one of the most effective therapies for recalibrating these networks and helping the body return to coherence.

My clinical areas of focus include:
• Stress and emotional health
• Sleep issues
• Pain and musculoskeletal tension
Men’s health
• Hormone health
• Digestive concerns
• Fatigue and burnout
Nervous system regulation

Every patient presents with a unique pattern. My role is to understand that pattern clearly and support your body’s innate ability to heal.

Why Choose Whole Systems Healthcare Boulder for Acupuncture?

Patients choose our clinic because acupuncture here is delivered within a truly holistic medical model. Our acupuncturists are also naturopathic doctors with extensive training in integrative primary care. This means your practitioner understands your internal medicine needs and can view your health through multiple diagnostic lenses, including Chinese medicine, naturopathic medicine, functional labs, and Western conventional testing.

We also provide a high-touch, one-on-one experience. Acupuncture treatments are not overlapped or rushed, and your practitioner stays in the room for the entire session. This allows time for supportive therapies such as moxibustion, gentle bodywork, channel palpation, cupping, and other manual techniques that enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.

At Whole Systems Healthcare Boulder, you receive care that is:
• Provided by practitioners trained in acupuncture, East Asian Medicine, and integrative medicine
• Individualized and systems-based rather than protocol-driven
• One-on-one, with your practitioner present for your entire visit
• Supportive of the whole person, including body, mind, and emotional wellbeing
• Enhanced by moxibustion, bodywork, and other manual therapies when needed
• Trauma-informed, patient-centered, and evidence-informed
• Offered in a calm, clean, therapeutic environment
• Conveniently located on Pearl Street in Boulder

This approach allows us to give patients exactly what they need, not just what insurance companies will reimburse, creating a deeper and more effective therapeutic experience.
