Frequently Asked Questions

Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine (NDs) are trained as primary care providers who address the underlying cause of disease through individualized and natural therapies. Naturopathic doctors are unique in their ability to bridge both conventional and holistic medicine perspectives, allowing them to utilize the best of both worlds safely and effectively. The goal of a naturopathic doctor is to employ the safest and most effective therapies that support and promote the body’s natural healing process, helping patients to reach their health potential. As professional leaders and pioneers in science-based natural medicine, naturopathic doctors advocate for the development of professional standards, accountability, and regulation of all forms of medicine in all jurisdictions to maintain public safety and freedom of choice in healthcare. Further, they support broad inclusion, collaboration, and equal access in the healthcare system at all levels.

No. Naturopathic doctors are trained extensively in the use of pharmaceuticals, and in some states have equal prescribing rights to MDs. Pharmaceuticals play a significant role in saving lives and managing severe symptoms, including chronic symptoms that impair activities of daily living. However, NDs are trained to take a conservative approach to the use of pharmaceuticals, and, depending on the patient’s needs and goals, try to utilize other treatment options first. Our intention is to support health and healing by using the least invasive intervention possible.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), also known as East Asian Medicine, is a modern medical system that traces its practices back to ancient healing arts derived in China, Japan, the Koreas, and neighboring regions. This medical system includes an array of modalities that have been refined over thousands of years, are the subject of a growing body of clinical research, and are being used throughout the world today. Chinese Medicine stands freely as a complete medical system, unifying elegant and precise diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic techniques with self-cultivation practices. Sessions focus on resolving obstructive patterns, nourishing deficiencies, and can include mindfulness-based counseling.

Whole Systems Healthcare Blatimore Clinic is a non-profit, direct care holistic medicine practice. We develop results-driven, individualized treatment plans for your healthcare needs and goals. We offer naturopathic medicine, Chinese medicine including acupuncture, and bodywork to address your acute and chronic health concerns.

Dr. Santiago Nevarez focuses on treating the person as well as the disease in order to enhance treatment outcomes. His approach focuses on increasing the ability of the body to self regulate and heal instead of focusing only on managing symptoms with medications or supplements. Dr. Nevarez uses a combination of modalities from traditional and conventional medicine, while empowering the patient with high quality, practical health information for implementing sustainable positive lifestyle changes.

Primarily, a medical doctor (MD) is trained through a clinical orientation toward saving lives and managing symptoms–focusing on the use of pharmaceutical medications and surgery as methods of treatment. This medical approach is best used for managing severe infectious diseases, trauma, symptom palliation, and necessary surgical procedures.

A naturopathic doctor (ND) is trained as a holistic healthcare provider with a focus on restoring health. Therefore, NDs are trained in an array of modalities that may be helpful for their patients in their pursuit of health and wellness, such as botanical medicine, nutrition, counseling, homeopathy, physical medicine, and lifestyle medicine. NDs focus on treating the person rather than their disease.

Direct care medicine is a relationship between a patient and a physician where the patient pays a monthly membership fee for services.  In exchange for the monthly fee, doctors provide enhanced care (access via email and phone, online scheduling, flexible scheduling and lower cost for labs). This model removes insurance from the doctor-patient relationship, allowing concierge care for fewer patients than in a conventional practice.

We spend about 30-60 minutes or more with patients per visit depending upon the visit and the patient’s needs.

Our Baltimore Clinic does not currently accept health insurance, but we can provide a form, known as a superbill, for you to submit to your insurance company. You may be able to receive reimbursement from your insurance providers for our services. You may also use a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for visits, labs, and medicinary items.
